In the Zhilyaev Laboratory of Mechanics of Gradient Nanomaterials an experimental reversible rolling mill DUO with individual drive of the working rolls has been installed and is functioning. The mill is designed for conducting scientific and experimental research on metal processing technologies with the aim of creating new gradient, bimodal, and heterogeneous metallic nanomaterials with increased strength and plasticity for advanced structural applications.

The uniqueness of the mill is the ability to produce multi-pass reverse rolling of sheet blanks from an initial thickness of 100 mm to a final thickness of 0.3+0.03 mm from ferrous (Fe) and non-ferrous (Al, Cu, Ti) metals and alloys with a yield strength of up to 1500 MPa in two modes: 1) asymmetric rolling with a mismatch in the circumferential speeds of the two working rolls; 2) symmetric rolling with the same peripheral speeds of the two working rolls.

In terms of its parameters and functionality, this scientific infrastructure facility is unparalleled in the Russian Federation and corresponds to the latest generation of foreign rolling mills. It is highly sought after by the scientific community and allows for the achievement of significant scientific results at a global level, which cannot be achieved using other facilities, including mass-produced scientific equipment and complexes based solely on it.
